Description
An atmosphere of detente and relief prevailed following the apprehension leading up to Lebanon's general elections which resulted in the victory of the March 14 coalition, which maintained control of the majority of seats in parliament. Acknowledgement of defeat by the Hizbullah-led opposition furthered the mood of rapprochement between the two rival camps, which was illustrated by the recent meeting between Hizbullah Chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat and later between Nasrallah and majority leader Saad Hariri. But the rapprochement would not have happened without regional and international blessing, according to Beirut's daily AN NAHAR's columnist Abdel Karim Abu Nasser, who reported that a sort of international understanding was reached, setting the mood for the post-elections phase. The accord basically called for respecting the outcome of the poll, which would eventually produce a majority and an opposition, and ensuring the participation of all factions in power on the basis of national consensus and exchange of guarantees and assurances, Abu Nasser said in a takeout on June 19, quoting Paris-based European diplomatic sources.
